Welcome to Tennessee History Day!

The year 2009 will bring about a significant change to the Tennessee History Day program. On April 4, 2009, the state competition will be held for the first time in Nashville, Tennessee. For the last 20 years, the University of Memphis has done a terrific job hosting the annual state competition in Memphis and growing the National History Day program across the state of Tennessee. But with all things comes change and the Tennessee Historical Society is pleased to welcome the state competition to Nashville. We look forward to working with teachers, parents, students and all of the terrific district coordinators and are dedicated to continuing the great work of growing the National History Day program that began at the University of Memphis!

Stay tuned for more updates!

What is History Day?

History Day is not just a day, but every day! National History Day is a year-long curriculum enhancement program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, websites, and research papers based on research related to an annual theme. These projects are then evaluated at local, state, and national competitions. The 2009 competition theme is The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies.

Tennessee History Day is open to all public, private, and homeschooled students. All students compete in district History Day competitions before being eligible to compete at the Tennessee History Day State Competition. Winners of the State competition, held April 4, 2009 at Legislative Plaza in downtown Nashville are eligible to compete in National History Day, at the University of Maryland in mid-June.
